And he looked up, and saw the rich men casting their gifts into the treasury.
And he saw also a certain poor widow casting in thither two mites.
And he said, Of a truth I say unto you, that this poor widow hath cast in more than they all:
For all these have of their abundance cast in unto the offerings of God: but she of her penury hath cast in all the living that she had.
Lucas 21:1-4
Let’s see some important points:
First of all we can see some riches whose offered what they did not need anymore, and a poor widow that gave everything she had.
These verses teach us clearly something about what our Lord appreciates in someone’s conduct.
Note that the Lord himself testified about what she did. She, above all, showed love (also faith, but this is to another day). What that woman did was similar to the sacrifice of Abel, the man who gave his best offer unto his God, and until today he is remembered as righteous.
Anything you do to God must be done for love. If you don’t, it is better avoid or stop doing it. It would be hypocritical (to show a value you don’t have) to do or continue doing something without love.
Unfortunately love it is more and more rare in these days and I think it is not exaggeration to say that love is also rare in the church of Christ. Therefore, it is a good idea to think about what you are doing for God, if you do not feel that you really love, don’t do it. You don’t have to please anyone but the Lord. This is your priority.
As King David, to be honest with God, then with men.
We must consider another aspect, but we will talk about that tomorrow.
God bless you all.
